Hey Girl!
Do you want to step up your hair game, but do not fee like robbing a bank to pay for pricey hair extensions? Well, I am going to show you just how easy it is to make your own custom clip in extensions.
First of all, you can easily go to any beauty store and pick up some pre-sewn clip in’s, BUT the weft thickness is basically going to be NOTHING. In my opinion, it’s way more cost efficient // beneficial to buy the hair by the bag and custom cut to your desired sizes.
LET’S GET STARTED:
Find a beauty store that has a ton of hair options and have someone help you color match your hair. My natural hair blends perfectly with the EMPIRE YAKI #4 If you feel like your brown hair is a standard medium color, you can purchase directly from Amazon by clicking the link above.
I am also purchasing Janeiro 9A 613 to blend and give my hair a little bit more of a blonde dimension. I used to have really light ombré “blonde” hair and instead of bleaching my hair I just use the clip in’s to add a pop blonde.

Before I explain the process of how I make my extensions, I wanted to fill you in on why I think you should spend the time to make them yourself and trust me it will not take much convincing.
YOU WILL SAVE UP TO $ 200.00 DOLLARS AND EACH EXTENSION WILL BE WAY THICKER THAN ANYTHING YOU CAN GET ON THE MARKET.
The cutting process is so simple. Take your hair out of the bag and carefully start to unwind the weft. the hair is going to be one continuous long piece, so be careful not to get the weft tangled.
Once you have your hair unwinded, take the hair weft and place behind your hair start low right above your neck area. make this cut slightly small, I would suggest 5 inches or less. For the middle cut I would go with either 8 or 9 inches. FYI, I do not like to wear extensions on the sides of my hair and this is why I make my middle cuts a little longer so they will wrap towards the front of my hairline. Also, my hair is basically the same length as the extensions that I use so there is no need to wear on the sides. I am wearing the clips in just to give my hair a fuller // thicker appearance.

Now that you have all of your cuts completed it is time to glue the hair together and create the fuller extension. I would say before you start the glueing process you hold some pieces together and see how it is going to blend in with your hair. If your hair color is one solid color you can skip this step and just go to town with the hot glue gun. SIDE NOTE: feel free to use hair extension glue, I just chose to use my hot glue gun because (a. I already had it on hand and (b. I did not feel like spending money on something I would only need for this project.
With two bags of hair I was able to make 5 custom clip in extensions. I ended up not using the small cuts of the blonde because I wanted a solid brown bottom piece. Also, I am not wearing one of the 9″ cuts because my hair is not blonde enough. I made a really blonde extension just incase I decide to highlight my hair down the road. You can get completely creative with how you want to sandwich // glue your wefts together.
HOW I PEICED MY CUTS TOGETHER:
- Bottom 5″ weft: 3 brown cuts // glued 3 pieces on top of each other.
- Middle 8″ weft: 2 blonde cuts // 3 brown cuts glued on top of blonde.
- Middle 9″ weft: 1 brown cut // 1 blonde cut // 1 brown cut glued.
- Crown 8″ weft: 1 blonde cut // 1 brown cut glued on top of blonde.
- Blonde 9″ weft: 2 blonde cuts // 1 brown cut // 1 blonde cut glued.
I went thin on the Crown extension because I did not want a super thick piece showing through my real hair. Nothing more embarrassing than someone telling you that they can see your tracks showing!
Okay, so now that you have glued all of your wefts of hair to your desired size all that is left to do is sew on your clips and you are DONE!
Here is a photo of the all the extensions:

I promise this process is not as hard as it sounds. If you need a video tutorial I will be posting one to my IGTV on Insta. Good luck on making your own DIY clip in hair extensions.
